~C~O~L~O~R~ AND ~P~O~E~T~R~Y
In the novel, The Book Thief narrator, Death, sees the world, people, and events in colors.
"First the colours.
Then the humans.
That's usually how I usually see things."
(Death, p. 3)
How do you see things in your life?
"People observe the colours of a day at its beginnings and ends, but to me it's quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different colours. Waxy yellows, cold-spat blues. Murky darknesses." (p.5)
Choose a significant day from your life. It may be memorable because of a sad day or a day that brought you great excitement or happiness. Recall your chosen day and consider all the emotions and feelings during this day. What colors do you feel represent and remind you of these emotions?
Using various art supplies and materials create a collage that represents the events from your memorable day as a visual representation of all emotions, events, objects, and feelings that occurred. After your collage is complete, compose a free verse poem which explains the day, the images, feelings, emotions, and colors of your day.
Example of a Free Verse Poem
I Dream'd in a Dream
by Walt Whitman
I DREAM'D in a dream I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the
whole of the rest of the earth,
I dream'd that was the new city of Friends,
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love, it led
the rest,
It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city,
And in all their looks and words.

Pre-Reading
Think of things you have always wanted to say to a person or different people but just never had the courage. Considering there are no consequences for what is said, choose someone or 5 different people you would like or have always wanted to say something to whether it's positive or negative. Keep in mind these are things or ideas you normally wouldn't have the guts or courage to say but there are no consequences and you do not have to specify names.
